Play Is a Roomy Subject was developed as part of the University of Ottawa’s Curating for Contemporary Art course, under the mentorship of Professor Celina Jeffery.
Connecting a diverse group of Welsh and Canada-based artists, this exhibition investigates how the simple yet elusive concept of play shapes affective experience. The student-curators further challenge the boundaries of play to explore how identity, memory, and care can be revealed through hidden realms and material gestures.
Play Is a Roomy Subject is rooted in a theoretical investigation of play as a journey of process, movement, and re-creation. Viewers are cast as active participants and invited to engage with the artworks as a form of aesthetic, emotional, and physical care.
